Retro crazes have exploded in recent years. Video games are certainly no exception to such trends. There have been countless games that use retro aesthetics to capitalize on nostalgia. Pixel art and sprites have dominated the indie scene. These games often give nods to the mascot platformers of the 16-bit era. Stephen DiDuro’s Freedom Planet falls into this category.
A culmination of bad decisions created the demon spawn that is Sonic ’06. Often cited as one of the worst games ever made. You are probably asking yourself “How bad could it really be?” You poor, unfortunate soul. You do not know the horrors that await you. That is why I must save all of you from playing this game! Sonic Colors was released for the Nintendo Wii in 2010. Developed by Sonic Team, Colors came out at a time when Sonic’s reputation was heavily damaged by Sega releasing several critically panned titles such as Sonic 06 and Sonic and the Black Knight. Sonic Team wanted to get back to basics to make the most of the weak hardware. Let’s see if Sonic Colors can change my view of the franchise.
