10 Great Female Videogame Characters

Before the month of March ended, I wanted to do something in honor of Women’s History Month.  Since this is the internet, how about a top 10?  You can’t get more internet than that.  Videogames have a history of not be the most inclusive toward the female demographic, but things have changed in recent years.  We’ve seen plenty of good female protagonists in this generation.  Even still, the AAA industry is still hesitant to embrace females as protagonists.  All because focus groups say that 12-year-old boys think girls are icky.  Well, that’s a story for another time.  Instead, lets discuss 10 great females in videogames in no particular order.  Let’s get down to business.

Elizabeth-Bioshock Infinite

Elizabeth bioshock infinite

Elizabeth was Bioshock Infinite true star.  She is intelligent and doesn’t take any bullshit.  Elizabeth possessed an ability to open up “tears” and enter other timelines.  Booker DeWitt saves her from her life of isolation and the two make their way through the floating city of Columbia, an American exceptionalist Utopia drenched in white supremacy and religious fanaticism.  Elizabeth learns who she really is and how many lies she’s been fed by her “father.”  Saying anymore would get into spoiler territory.  Chances are, you already know how it ends.

Bayonetta is a witch, a camp, sexy witch.  Devil May Cry creator, Hideki Kamiya, was looking to make a spiritual successor to the iconic Capcom series.  Kamiya and Platinum Games came up with Bayonetta, which revels in its silliness and sexuality.  The witch herself owns her sexuality.  She’ll kick the asses of angels and demons alike and look damn good doing it.  Then dance on their corpses while sucking on a lollipop.  Bayonetta is quite sardonic and playful.  If you have the chance, pick up Bayonetta 2 on the Switch.  You won’t regret it.  The series deserves way more attention.

Princess Zelda- Legend of Zelda

princess zelda

Unlike another Nintendo princess, Zelda isn’t always a damsel in distress.  Being the holder of the Triforce of Wisdom, Princess Zelda is always integral to the plot.  She will make great sacrifices to protect her subjects.  Zelda possesses exceptional magical skill.  The princess has taken a more active role in recent titles.

Kat-Gravity Rush

Kat is the strong-willed protagonist of Gravity Rush, a game designed around her ability to manipulate gravity.  She acts as a superhero in the vaguely European city of Hekkesville.  Her energetic nature is very endearing.  Not to mention how much ass her powers kick. Kat flies around at the speed of sound.  Sonic would be very jealous.

Makoto Niijima-Persona 5

makoto niijima

Makoto is a no-nonsense student council president and the brains of the Phantom Thieves operation.  She has a strong sense of justice and can be surprisingly reckless.  Due to living in her older sister’s shadow, she starts out with an inferiority complex but becomes far more confident by the end of the game.  Makoto is always quick to take charge.  Definitely Persona 5’s best girl.

Aloy-Horzon: Zero Dawn

Born an outcast, Aloy doesn’t seem to belong anywhere.  She is raised by Rost who teaches her how to take care of herself.  This tough ginger knows her way around a fight.  Aloy can control machines, a very helpful ability considering all the robot dinosaurs she has to fight.  How badass is that?

Samus Aran-Metroid

samus aran metroid

The OG female protagonist.  Metroid shocked the gaming world in 1986 when it was revealed that Samus was a woman the whole time.  Samus was brought up by Chozo after Ridley killed her parents.  She was infused with Chozo DNA, giving her superhuman abilities.  Samus works alone as a bounty hunter taking down Ridley’s infamous space pirates.

2B-Nier: Automata

Nier automata

The world of Nier: Automata is a strange, lonely place.  Inhabited by androids and robots, 2B learns what it means to be human.  She is a battle android who only aims to follows her orders.  Seemingly emotionless, the events that unfold in the 14th Machine War crack 2B’s stoic nature.  She becomes frustrated with her role and wants to break the cycle.  Nier: Automata is sad, funny take on a dystopian future seen through 2B’s eyes.

Alyx Vance-Half Life 2

alyx vance hf2

Alyx Vance is as important to Half Life 2 as Gordon Freeman.  Alyx assists Gordon throughout the game, making her his most important ally.  She goes into battle against the Combine and is an adept hacker.  Alyx also maintains a cheerful and optimistic personality despite horrors that surround the plot of the game.  Intelligent, brave, and always ready to lighten the mood.

Aya Brea-Parasite Eve

aya parasite eve

Aya is an ordinary NYPD officer when many bizarre and frightening occurrences start happening around her.  The mysterious being, Eve, activates a strange mutation of her mitochondria, giving Aya the ability to fight horrifying supernatural creatures.  Aya must find a way to stop Eve from wreaking havoc on New York City.

  1. Those are some solid choices – especially Zelda and Alyx Vance. I don’t think it’s possible to have a list of the best female characters in gaming without including Samus.

  2. No Joanna Dark makes your list baffles me, not to mention Jill Valentine. But again it is an opinion piece, personally Joanna Dark revolutionized the 64 bit era of graphics and a strong female lead.
