We Should Stop caring About E3

With this year’s E3 concluded, it’s got me thinking, why do we care? Every year in June, executives and developers get together to announce big releases in the near future (sometimes several years later). Gamers look forward to seeing new games to add to their wish lists. Unfortunately, E3 often brings us disappointment. Years of executives lying to our faces has made me cynical. Publishers and developers are making their games seem as appealing as possible. Executives are trying to drive hype to build up pre-orders. E3 is of questionable relevancy in 2017. The conference has become a meaningless exercise in corporate pandering and back rubs.

Publishers Are Making Sales Pitches

When it comes to E3, publishers and developers are trying to make their games look as appealing as possible. The trailers revealed are not always what the final product will become. Gameplay is not always shown at these presentations, but instead pre-rendered cutscenes and scripted sequences. There have been several instances of publishers misleading the public about future releases. Ubisoft promised a great next-gen experience with Watch Dogs. Everyone was blown away by its reveal at E3 2012. Watch Dogs was released in 2014, after several delays, to lukewarm reception. The final product was underwhelming compared to the game that Ubisoft promised. It was a case of promising more than what they could deliver. Sega and Gearbox pulled a similar stunt with the release of Aliens: Colonial Marines, albeit more sinister. The scripted sequences shown to the public and press were fabrications. The backlash significantly damaged Gearbox’s reputation. Let’s not put much stock into what publishers have to say, since the only thing they want is your money. There are no depths too low publishers will sink to get that money.

Executives Are Not Speaking to Us


Executives running AAA publishers are looking to drive hype to increase pre-orders. They do not care about making gamers happy. Many of these executives have shown outright disdain for their customer base. Even referring to them as “whales to catch” at an industry conference. E3 is opportunity for executives to give presentations with their fake smiles as they drive the dagger in the back. Executives are trying to take your money on blind trust. They want a culture of hype and implement nonsensical pre-order bonuses to get your money. While I get that they want returns on their investment, at least don’t treat us like we’re stupid. E3 is not for gamers but the company shareholders. Business as usual in the AAA games industry.

E3 is No Longer Relevant

Why do people still care about E3 in 2017? The internet makes all new developments available instantly at our fingertips. When something significant happens, we immediately know. Nintendo has not placed much value in E3 and many thought this foolish. They may do many foolish things but this is not one of them. Nintendo hosts its own monthly presentations in the form of Nintendo Direct on the company’s YouTube channel. Announcements are made for future releases and Nintendo reaches its intended audience. E3 presentations are often boring cringefests. The presenters use industry buzzwords and seem clueless about the subject matter. They try to be “hip” and make forced jokes. The cringe has been the source of several well-known memes. Anyone remember “attack giant enemy crab for massive damage?” E3 is boring and serves little purpose in the present day.

Final Thoughts

E3 no longer has much value to gamers. Announcements made during E3 are hardly worth the fanfare. Publishers are making desperate sales pitches, even if misleading. Its put together by industry executives to drive hype for pre-orders. E3’s relevancy in this era of instant information at our fingertips is questionable. E3 is one big industry circle jerk. No more will I care about anything that occurs at E3. We’ve been fooled too many times. Do you think E3 is still relevant?
